The importance of sports and games in school encompasses more than just the benefit of physical activity. Increase in self-esteem and mental alertness make school sports and games necessary for every school age. It teaches the children life skills like Teamwork, leadership, and patience. At Newark School, we cannot stress enough how important it is to NOT impose unrealistic expectations and hard achievable goals on children from the start. Children should participate in sports not for instant success and results, but rather to develop their physical and intellectual skills. Otherwise, forcing the child to play some sports may create a counter-effect and as a result make them develop an aversion to sports in general.
At Newark, we prioritise integrating sports into our everyday lives’. Results, achievements, medals and awards may come later on, though they require a lot of hard work, discipline and sacrifice. We do not have large sports facilities at school. Available land for sports in Sliema is scarce but this does not hinder us at all. With special arrangements with sports facilities nearby we make sure that our children have access to indoor and outdoor sports areas. We organise one full day of sports per term in addition to the normal weekly lessons. Parents are also encouraged to participate as this is good for team building among the teachers, parents and children. Our children love the physical education sessions and the term sports days.
